Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to achieve a breast size that is more proportionate to the body. It is often performed to alleviate physical discomfort and emotional distress caused by overly large breasts, such as back, neck, and shoulder pain, skin irritation, and difficulty with physical activities. It can also improve body image and self-esteem.

The surgeon makes one or more incisions, usually around the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple), vertically down to the breast fold, and sometimes along the breast crease. The type and length of the incision depend on the amount of tissue to be removed and the patient’s anatomy. The surgeon then removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to reshape and reduce the size of the breasts. The remaining tissue is lifted and repositioned. In many cases, the nipple and areola are repositioned to a more youthful and natural location. If necessary, the nipple may be temporarily detached and later reattached in its new position.
